Crooked Fingers
Red Devil Dawn is the 3rd full length from Crooked Fingers, and the first to be released on Merge Records. Crooked Fingers is the latest project from one of the rock underground's most enigmatic songwriters, Eric Bachmann. Eric got his first bit of recognition as the front man for the Archers Of Loaf, one of the most popular and critically lauded bands of the mid-to-late 90's underground scene.
Crooked Fingers was born in early 2000 as Bachmann emerged from the dissolution of Archers with a new band and a new album. Their self titled debut, Crooked Fingers, may have taken some fans by surprise, at least those expecting the high-energy noise pop of the Archers. Instead Bachmann unleashed a collection of powerfully melancholy songs about the down and out, the forgotten and abused, the people you avoid on the street...their stories all woven around dark, baroque melodies that conjure images of smokey barrooms as opposed to gilded stages. Fans were quick to adjust though, and eagerly followed their hero on these new journeys down the back alleys of shantytowns, full of desperation, addiction and salvation. The press quickly tabbed Bachmann as an heir apparent of sorts, the mantle of poetic melancholia previously occupied by the likes of Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits.
