LIVE UNITED: Day of Action Concert for Stuff the Bus
From coast to coast on the longest day of the year, United Ways will participate in a nationwide "Day of Action" as a call-to-action for individuals to LIVE UNITED. All proceeds from this event benefit United Way's Stuff the Bus Project. Stuff the Bus delivers bookbags full of new school supplies to children living in homeless shelters throughout the region.
Join us for this benefit concert featuring four great indie bands:
Pepi Ginsberg Pepi Ginsberg has a distinctively mournful voice with a remarkable range. On her latest CD, Red, she croons with a weathered and passionate warble, gracefully channeling '60s psychedelic pop and folk and retooling it to fit her own imaginative stylings. Red is full of off-kilter rhythms and unexpected instrumentation. Spare violins dance woozily with bleating trumpet lines and shuffling rhythms. Fuzzy guitars take a walk with reedy organs. The mood is melancholy one moment, joyous and celebratory the next. The mix is sonically ambitious without overwhelming the heart of the songs, due in no small part to producer Scott McMicken, frontman for the Philadelphia-based psych-rock group Dr. Dog. A Sunny Day in Glasgow A Sunny Day in Glasgow are a band from Philadelphia that plays dreamy pop music that uses lots of samples, guitars, and melodies. They have just finished recording their sophomore record, Ashes Grammar, which will be released sometime in 2009 (probably September)! Oh! Pears Oh! Pears, a.k.a. Corey Duncan, is a Philly-based indie act. Corey played guitar in Pattern Is Movement up until early 07'. He is currently in the process of making his very own record with the help of the sensational Chris Ward, a current member of PIM, who is recording the music and playing the AWESOME drum parts. Neighborhood Choir The Neighborhood Choir is a band of four gentlemen from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are a ragged bunch who practice and record in an uncomfortably small and damp basement in North Philadelphia. The idea of "environment shaping sound" applies well here, as the boys produce a warm and comfortable sound. There are no sharp edges here. Their closeness as friends is obvious, since you're more likely to see them laughing onstage than putting on an air of pompous rock stardom. Instead of relying upon a single singer, the vocal performance of the group depends upon all of the members, who support one another with mellifluous harmony.
