This special concert promises an unforgettable Mother’s Day celebration, featuring the outstanding Watts mother-daughter team, and band, in a concert of never before heard songs from a book compiled in 1927 by Susan’s great-grandfather, Joseph Hoffman. Music will include his compositions, songs by his son Jake Hoffman, and other rarely performed Philly tunes, in brand-new arrangements by Susan Watts.

Elaine Watts is a feisty presence on the drums, while her daughter Susan is simply one of the most passionate, gutsy trumpet players or vocalists that you will ever hear—anywhere. The rest of the band is filled out with a lineup of klezmer stars from the east coast and Canada, including two members of other important Philadelphia klezmer families, two of the greatest klezmer historians working today, two more great women players, a tuba virtuoso, and a rapper/hiphopkeler (a blender of Jewish music with modern technologies).

The concert will be followed by a Q&A discussion with the artists.

This project occurs with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Philadelphia Music Project (funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts and administered by the University of the Arts), the PA Humanities Council, the PA Historical & Museum Commission, and Philadelphia Folklore Project Members.
