The Board of Education sprang to life in 2007 as a side project of Seattle band Central Services. While the band was gaining notoriety in the indie music scene (a stint in rotation at CMJ station-of-the-year KEXP in Seattle, a month-long stay on CMJ’s national charts, a spot in Three Imaginary Girls Top Northwest Releases, and a performance at Bumbershoot), frontman Kevin Emerson, a former elementary school science teacher turned children’s novelist, had been toying around with a few songs written for kids.
Kevin showed the kids’ songs to the band. With song topics like a lonely tomato, the dangers of commas and the wonders of tin foil, it was immediately obvious to everyone how refreshing it would be to play music that was so original, so smart, and so much pure fun. They decided to do a couple shows as the BoE and the response was so positive that well… they went and made a whole record!

Since the release of Emily Songs in 2000, Ben Rudnick and Friends have been playing family friendly music featuring instantly hum-able, original songs and fun spins on well known traditional material.
Boasting a high level of adventurous musicianship their award winning recordings contain a unique acoustic sound ranging from light folk to bluegrass, calypso, and rock. Alex Mitnick and Alan Bell, Philadelphia based musician and lyricist, began writing musicals for children focused on peace and communication before releasing their first album in 2004. Coach Cotton, Williebob, and Boogie Woogie Bennie are Rocknoceros (pronounced like rhinoceros), the Washington, DC area's award-winning band that makes very cool music for children of all ages. That's where kids meet hip hop without compromising either one. This is accomplished through full respect for both the traditions of hip hop and the magical world of childhood. ASTROGRASS FOR KIDS gets kids and their parents dancing together, with a unique blend of bluegrass music and down-home humor. Astrograss concerts feature sing-a-longs, dance contests, and high-energy fiddle hoedowns. Their original songs cover topics like spelling, whether Pluto is a planet, bedtime and the many neighborhoods of Brooklyn. In addition to a wide range of original songs, Astrograss for Kids plays traditional American folk numbers, like 'Oh, Susanna' and 'Hot Corn, Cold Corn' They also invite their young fans to submit poems, which the band then sets to music. One such song, 'Airplane', is on their latest release,"Let Me Stay Up All Night".
