Project/Object featuring Ike Willis & Don Preston Performing the Music of Frank Zappa & More

The members of PROJECT/OBJECT feel that Frank Zappa is one of the 20th Century's greatest and most important composers, and they are on a mission to bring his music to the masses by faithfully recreating the live Zappa experience.

PROJECT/OBJECT formed in the early '90s as an offshoot from an annual Frank Zappa birthday celebration that took place in guitarist Andre Cholmondeley's basement in New Jersey. As the event grew in size and popularity, PROJECT/OBJECT decided to take their show on the road, performing Zappa's music in more cities and larger venues, with a growing set list from every era of Zappa's 30-year recording career. The band strives to stay true to Frank's vision of constantly challenging the musicians and the audiences.

During Zappa's 1984 and 1988 tours, members of PROJECT/OBJECT became friendly with Ike Willis, the legendary 10-plus year Zappa vocalist and guitarist whose career with Frank began in the role of "Joe" on the quintessential Zappa album, Joe's Garage. In 1995, the members of PROJECT/OBJECT sent a tape of a live show to Ike and he was impressed enough that he agreed to come out to the East Coast to join the band onstage for a few gigs in the New York area. After that tremendous first outing, Ike agreed to repeat this experience in the future.

Ike felt the members of PROJECT/OBJECT were able to recreate the fun and excitement that he felt with Frank Zappa on stage. Many other Zappa alumni feel the same way, which has also inspired them to perform with the band, some for entire tours. Napoleon Murphy Brock has now joined the band on two national tours and in Winter 2003, Don Preston went out for his first tour with the band. Since 1998, when the band first took their act on the road, the following alumni have performed with the band: Willis, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Jimmy Carl Black, Ray White, Don Preston, Bunk Gardner, Denny Walley, Mike Keneally, Arthur Barrow, Roy Estrada, Billy Mundi and even Al Malkin. Other notable artists they've collaborated with include Phish drummer Jon Fishman, Capt. Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas, New York City big band leader and "Zappologist" Ed Palermo, Al Schnier, Chuck Garvey and Jim Loughlin of moe., and Dweezil Zappa drummer Jerry Cucurullo.

Frank Zappa was extremely influential to many musicians and bands, especially many jambands, including Phish, moe., and Deep Banana Blackout. While many jamband fans are aware that Frank Zappa was influential, they are largely unfamiliar with his music. Of those who are familiar, many were too young to have seen him in concert. PROJECT/OBJECT is the closest they will get to the live Zappa experience, and the band has been enjoying increasing support from this growing scene.

In every new market they visit, PROJECT/OBJECT converts the curious into dedicated fans. They want to remind old Zappa fans of the way it used to be and let younger fans, who never experienced a Zappa show, see and hear the way it was.

Kindred The Family Soul

With two highly-acclaimed and successful albums behind them, soulful husband-and-wife duo Aja Graydon and Fatin Dantzler admit that approaching a third Kindred CD elicited some thought-provoking conversations about musical direction and creative growth during a time of universal change. Questions about lyrical topics, an exploration of Kindred’s place in the music pantheon and the team’s relationship to the ‘neo-soul’ movement all surfaced during the making of THE ARRIVAL, a pungent and powerful set of twelve songs. While the adventurous album’s title was inspired by the birth of twin daughters in 2007, THE ARRIVAL also signals some notable artistic changes: “For the first time, we opened ourselves up to other opinions’ of who Kindred is,” says Aja. “We really tried to explore, to define what the Kindred sound is.” Adds Fatin, “We asked the question, ‘what is vintage Kindred?’ We asked ourselves and other people that question…”

The answer lies front and center in THE ARRIVAL which fuses the organic elements associated with the Philly-based movement from which Kindred emerged onto the international music scene in 2003 (with the Hidden Beach debut “Surrender To Love”) with clearly-defined structured songs that have wide-ranging appeal. Seamlessly, Aja and Fatin have maintained the artistic integrity clearly evident on their debut set and its 2006 follow up, “In This Life Together” while creating a new record that is both expansive and accessible in production values and lyrical subject matter. The result is a ‘feel-good’ cohesive album that flows with musical consistency yet covers topics that are at once personal and universal.

That Toga Band with Controlled Storms, KB Noise & Andy of the Future

An accomplised band that is never predictable, That Toga Band combines jazz, rock and latin influences together with creative composition, ambient sound and thoughtful instrumentation in order to create their own brand of music. Influenced by artists such as Bill Evans, Steve Kimock, and Neil Young, That Toga Band creates original music that turns heads in a truly new direction.

Melding acoustijazz flimflam and spacey landscapes with rock solid beats, That Toga Band pursues organic explorations of a creative smorgasbord. Structuring sonic melodies from a strongly harmonic angle, That Toga Band maintains subtle oddity while juggling odd time signatures and key changes. Quirky antics and light hearted entertainment shape the band's motto: "Invent yourself before you reinvent yourself."

That Toga Band has been creating and performing original compositions since December 2003 when the founding members met at the University of Vermont. Originally an improvisational based acoustic duo that was "forever engaging in characteristic pursuits of true underwater vibrational research", That Toga Band has meshed into a compositionally focused group that pushes the limits of what three people are capable of.

The New Mastersounds

The New Mastersounds are a four-piece band based in Leeds, England, whose modern take on vintage soul-jazz, funk and rock draws influences from Jimmies McGriff, Smith, and Hendrix, as well as their most closely-associated mentors, The Meters. Try to imagine Grant Green and Lou Donaldson having a fight in a Hammond Organ shop while James Brown holds the coats, and you have some idea of what to expect from this band. Their first single, One Note Brown, was released on Blow It Hard Records in 2000 and was passionately championed by acclaimed Northern Soul and funk DJ Keb Darge. To date, the band has released four studio records: 102%, This Is What We Do, Be Yourself, Keb Darge Presents… as well as The New Mastersounds Re::Mixed, and Live At La Cova. Also of note: their single, "Your Love Is Mine" featuring Corinne Bailey Rae, was used in the 2007 Warner Brothers movie Feast of Love.

Led by guitarist and producer Eddie Roberts, The New Mastersounds feature Joe Tatton on Hammond, Pete Shand on bass and Simon Allen on drums.
